A mention of Edgbaston once sent a shiver down Australian spines. But from this day on, it will forever be the scene of Pat Cummins's greatest stand and one of Australia's greatest Ashes triumphs.
It was all falling into place so politely for England, the game bending to Ben Stokes's whim like so many before it.
Even as Cummins and Lyon began ticking away at the runs required, few Aussies would have dared get their hopes up. We've seen this one before, we know when the twist is coming. Australia has not enjoyed too many successful run chases at Test level, and certainly not in recent years. The same could be said of Lyon, whose audacious clip over midwicket off the bowling of Broad was the moment the prospect of an Australian win truly became real.
Meanwhile England's day-one declaration was a seismic own goal, the sloppy loss of wickets on day four unforgivable and the decision to ignore the new ball with the game on the line a blight on Stokes's captaincy. Farewell Bazball, we hardly new ye.
