A groundbreaking study by the Roslin Institute explores how whole genome duplication shaped the complexity and evolution of life on Earth.
This process entails the complete duplication of an organism’s DNA , resulting in four sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two.A new study led by the Roslin Institute seeks to unlock the mysteries behind a powerful genetic phenomenon that has played a crucial role in the evolution of many species: whole genome duplication.
The research team believes this mechanism has fostered the incredible complexity and diversity seen in plants, animals, and other organisms throughout evolutionary history.The international research initiative, funded with £5.3 million over four years, will involve scholars from several prestigious institutions, including the University of Bath, Edinburgh’s School of Biological Sciences, and the Wellcome Sanger Institute.
Project leader Professor Dan Macqueen emphasized the significance of these duplications in shaping the course of life on our planet: “Whole genome duplications are a major but often misunderstood aspect of the evolutionary narrative for many species. We aim to reveal critical insights into how these events have influenced life on Earth.”
“By pinpointing instances of genome duplication and the subsequent rediploidization process, we hope to determine if these events have led to an increase in species or the emergence of new plant forms,” he added.
