While competitor Waffle House has implemented a 50-cent surcharge on eggs, Cracker Barrel is aiming to attract customers with a rewards program . Waffle House 's surcharge went into effect on Monday, but Cracker Barrel wasted no time in distancing itself from the price hike.
In a statement released Wednesday, Cracker Barrel emphasized its commitment to 'country hospitality,' stating, 'At Cracker Barrel, country hospitality is as important to us as a hearty breakfast — and that means not charging extra for eggs.'Instead of passing the cost burden onto their customers, Cracker Barrel is offering a double-pegs incentive for those who order egg dishes through its rewards program. 'That’s why we’ll be trading some pegs for eggs,' the company announced. 'Starting tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 6), all Cracker Barrel Rewards members will earn double pegs on all egg dishes through Wednesday, Feb. 12.'The rising egg costs are a direct result of the severe impact of bird flu outbreaks on chicken populations, according to the Agriculture Department's latest egg market overview. This unprecedented surge in egg prices has not only affected restaurant and grocery store pricing but has also led to widespread egg theft and an increase in people renting chickens to lay eggs at home.
