With Valentine’s Day just around the corner and romance in the air, experts say the love bug will also be affecting the Aurora area coyote population in the coming weeks as mating season for the animal begins to peak.
Experts say coyote sightings will likely increase in the Aurora area due to it being mating season for the animal.
“Coyotes aren’t nocturnal but they work 24/7 and go out whenever they want to. You see them more in the winter because there is no cover – no leaves, the bushes, and they are more visible,” Romano said. “The breeding time starts around the third week in January, and they are paired up. It’s been a mild winter and they haven’t had to work as hard to find food. It’s easier on their paws – for all the wildlife, it’s been easier.
“That’s the issue. The coyotes start to be a little more protective of their territories. They are realizing pups are coming soon, and know they need to provide for them and are going to be a little less tolerant of others in their territory,” Thompson said. “What people need to understand is their territory can be quite variable based on the individual.
Disease and incidents with motor vehicles have controlled the coyote population to some degree, Thompson said, although the ongoing study has provided some surprising results about the animal’s adaptability. In terms of any confrontation, Romano cautions “in the end it’s a wild animal and any wild animal you can’t predict what it’s going to do. They’re not pets, you shouldn’t feed them.”
“You know feeding birds is a fine thing but if you do it keeping the area clean and not just be dumping mass quantities of seed or having excessive amounts of feeders that will draw in the rodents and the birds” is important, he said.“Coyotes will view that as a place to find food,” he said. “It will contribute to associating human back yards as a place to get a meal as opposed to a place to avoid.
