A couple buying a home ended up losing $800,000 when they fell victim to an elaborate fake business invoice scam. The federal government’s Scamwatch said online criminals were hacking business’s IT systems, and sending out invoices with altered bank details to their customers. “People booking travel and buying cars have recently suffered more of these scams, but they can affect any type of business,” a Scamwatch spokesperson said.
When the $800,000 payment was made, the couple also received confirmation of it from the legal firm. But Scamwatch said the money had actually gone to the scammer, who had altered the invoice to include their own bank details.
