From the bullets Elvis fired to the days Ghosn spent behind bars, here are half-a-dozen-and-one stats you might not have ever known.

Numbers define reality. The count of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom determines what element it is; the tally of bricks in a bridge decides if it spans a creek or the Nile; the sum of your days on Earth reveal if you belong in school or the retirement home.

And that's just as true in the motoring realm, where everything from horsepower to curb weight to lap times is codified in the cold, hard, universal truth of numerical values. But some of these values may not be as obvious, or expected, as you might think. For example, the seven fascinating ones pulled together here. 1. Fewest victories for a winner of the Formula 1 world drivers’ championship: Mike Hawthorn in 1958 and Keke Rosberg in 1982 . Tragically, those seasons saw more fatalities than the champion drivers saw wins, with four deaths in ’58 and two in ’82. 2 Number of times Elvis Presley reportedly shot his 1971 De Tomaso Pantera. Today, only one bullet mark is left, on the steering wheel. “The bullet hole looks like it was made fairly straight on,” says a rep for the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, where the car now resides. 32 The number of feet traveled per gallon of diesel fuel burned by NASA’s “crawler” as it moves from Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building to the launchpad carrying an Artemis rocket ready for liftoff. The crawler holds 5000 gallons of diesel, and the rocket’s 2875-ton weight is roughly equivalent to that of 1000 pickup trucks. 130 Number of days infamous Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn spent in a Japanese jail between his November 2018 arrest and his escape from the country in December 2019. Ghosn vowed to clear his name in the financial-improprieties case, blaming “a handful of unscrupulous, vindictive individuals at Nissan.” We’re still waiting. 13,001. Number of vehicles sold by Joe Girard from 1963 to 1977, a record for a car salesperson. Girard, who worked at Merollis Chevrolet outside Detroit, was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for 12 straight years as the top car salesman on earth. His book How to Sell Anything to Anybody sold pretty well too. 3362.061. The record for miles driven during a 24 Hours of Le Mans victory, set by teammates Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas, and Mike Rockenfeller in an Audi R15+ TDI in 2010. That would be like driving from San Francisco to New York City, then turning around and hitting Cleveland, all in one day. 763.035. In mph, the current land speed record, which has held for 29 years. Royal Air Force pilot Andy Green set the flying-mile mark on October 15, 1997, driving the jet-powered ThrustSSC in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert and officially becoming the first to break the sound barrier on wheels.
