Labeling is more important than ever when it comes to educating consumers about the security of today’s smart devices, but it is just one piece of the puzzle.

The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark label will take the form of a logo and a QR code. This QR code will enable consumers to get additional and up-to-date information about the product prior to purchase or anytime after purchase. Some of the information will include things like what kind of sensor capabilities the product has, how data is collected and shared, how security updates will be applied and what kind of authentication it supports.

This White House initiative is a great start in terms of spreading awareness; however, even after the program launches, the U.S. will still be behind many other countries when it comes to securing our homes and offices. Several countries have already adopted legislation, including Singapore with its Cybersecurity Labeling Scheme program, which is based on the ETSI EN 303 645 requirements; the U.K.

So what can consumers and businesses do in the meantime to protect themselves as they consider purchasing connected devices?• Avoid devices that come with a default username and password. If they do, and this can’t be reset, you may want to return it and get a different product.There is no doubt that labeling is more important than ever when it comes to educating consumers about the security of today’s smart and connected devices, but it is just one piece of the puzzle.
