Slowing down to build a better API program now can enable the acceleration of innovation in the long run versus losing momentum with sprawl.
The API space is as dynamic and fluid as ever. In the midst of so much change, I think it's a good time to remind API teams to recognize where they are in the build process and to throw a lifeline to those who find themselves stuck midstream as they try to stand up a fledgling API program. For building APIs, there are two divergent paths: There’s the ideal, and there’s what happens. I’ve seen a lot of what happens, and the good news is that the ideal isn’t as far away as it may seem.
In other cases, developers recognize the advantages and organically implement many APIs as details of other roadmap features. However, all too often, this happens without adequate processes and tools, and developers start writing APIs without first establishing any governance or plan for documentation. As time passes and more APIs are written by more developers, the situation often becomes unwieldy.
Upon recognizing the problem, companies often seek “observability.” They want a comprehensive catalog, portal or source of truth that documents all of their APIs and those being developed. Taking an inventory makes sense because companies will ultimately need a catalog of all the APIs in order to govern them.
The first goal should be to wrangle all the company’s APIs into a single platform so they feel similar. Consistency across developer experiences is the desired end state, and to get there, you’ll need to automate consistency into your API governance.
