A recent PennLive investigative series uncovering potential problems with Ronald Sperry Jr.'s 1985 double-murder conviction has spurred action on his commutation application. The Pennsylvania Board of Pardons has officially filed Sperry's request and will include the PennLive reports in their merit review. While the process is expected to take several years, Sperry's family is hopeful this marks a significant step towards his release.

There’s still no firm timetable for how long the pardons board’s review of Sperry’s application and the underlying case will take, however. “There’s no way that the articles weren’t an impetus for that,” Sperry-Mauger said of the application’s long-delayed switch to official status. Dorothy Felker, 75, and Effie McAlicher, 77, were brutally stabbed to death in their North 36th Street, Hampden Township, home – located just a couple blocks from the Sperry household.
In addition, the state trooper who provided key fingerprint evidence against Sperry was later part of a scandal that freed a triple-murder convict from death row.
