Salas, who was arrested at 17 in connection with a fatal shooting, accepted a plea deal for the murder of 32-year-old Michael Vargas during an attempted car break-in at a Twin Peaks restaurant in November 2024. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office attributed the release to a system error, which allowed Salas to walk free instead of being transferred to a state prison. Two juvenile cases against Salas were dropped two days ago, but he was still supposed to serve his sentence for the murder conviction. The San Antonio Police Department is now actively searching for Salas, who is described as five foot ten inches tall with brown eyes and brown hair.
