The death toll at initiation schools has risen to 23 in the Eastern Cape.
"There are many things that are going wrong, which are leading to these fatalities and indeed this is so unwarranted and unacceptable," he said.
"It is really unbecoming that year on year we lose so many lives in a name of a ritual and therefore something drastic must be done." The secretary-general of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa, Zolani Mkiva, says something must be done over the deaths of initiates. Mkiva is calling for action.
