Government will support Shell's seismic survey in the Eastern Cape, maintains minister Gwede Mantashe, saying that any attempts to stop the survey is a threat to development and job creation
Mantashe said this at the East London International Convention Centre on Tuesday while addressing the third regional conference of the Amathole region of the ANC, where he was invited in his capacity as national ANC chairperson.
Mantashe said it was a bad idea to block Shell’s project as the petroleum giant was being welcomed in other countries such as Namibia, to conduct the same seismic surveys. This meant that South Africa would potentially lose out on massive development and employment opportunities, he added. It is painful to see the rising unemployment among our people. Please re-look at these issues. This province must develop.
Mantashe said practical steps needed to be taken in the economy in order to create jobs. If Shell discovered oil on the Wild Coast, this would create jobs for a lot of people in the province, he added. There have been several protests against Shell around the country since it announced plans for the seismic blasting off the Wild Coast.
Early this month, four environmental and human rights organisations lost an urgent court bid to block Shell from proceeding with its seismic survey.
