A bull moose in the Adirondack Mountains was rescued from Lake Abanakee after falling through the ice. New York conservation officials used chainsaws and specialized equipment to create a channel for the moose to escape.

A bull moose weighing around 1,000 pounds (455 kilograms) was rescued by New York conservation officials from Lake Abanakee in the Adirondack Mountains . The moose fell through the ice around 11 a.m. Thursday, about 200 feet from shore. Environmental Conservation Police officer, Lt. Robert Higgins, was dispatched to the lake after a passerby reported the incident.

He was joined by a pair of forest rangers, who used their ice rescue training and specialized equipment to safely reach the distressed animal. \The team donned dry suits for warmth and flotation, and used a long metal 'spud bar' to test the thickness of the ice, which varied from one to four inches. They brought safety ropes for added security and navigated a path across the lake, following the thickest ice to the moose. To create a channel for the moose to escape, the forest rangers used a chainsaw to cut away sections of ice connecting the area where the moose broke through to a thicker section. Lt. Higgins also pushed the ice blocks underneath the channel to clear the way. \The moose was hesitant to swim down the channel, so the officials tried to herd it. They used long metal sticks, but the bull moose wasn't intimidated. Eventually, they were able to direct the animal, and it quickly crawled onto the thicker ice. However, the ordeal, which lasted around two hours, had taken its toll on the moose. It was exhausted and shivering. The officials were relieved when the moose was able to stand up. \Moose are sometimes poached in New York and face threats from habitat loss, climate change, and tick infestations. This rescue highlights the challenges these majestic animals face and the importance of conservation efforts
