The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather watch for Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Lake counties from Friday until Sunday morning due to a lake effect snow storm. The watch is in effect on top of an existing lake effect snow warning that remains in effect until Thursday evening. Meteorologists predict 7 to 12 inches of snow accumulation, with the heaviest snowfall expected in Geauga County and eastern Cuyahoga County.

Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties are under winter weather watches from Friday until Sunday morning, but snow will start before that, according to the National Weather Service. This is on top of a lake effect snow warning that remains in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday. By Thursday night, the most heavily affected areas can expect four to eight more inches of snow on top of what has already fallen. The snow is expected to briefly let up Thursday night but resume Friday morning.

In all, meteorologists are projecting seven to 12 inches of snow accumulation. Geauga County and parts of Cuyahoga County east of Interstate 271 are expected to see the largest amounts of snow from the storm, said NWS Cleveland Meteorologist Karen Clark. Parts of Western Cuyahoga County can expect only a few inches of snow, she said. Lake effect snow tends to come in bursts, which is something drivers should be aware of, Clark said. In some areas, visibility could drop to a quarter mile, which is close to a white-out, Clark said. “One of the biggest problems with lake effect snow is you could be driving and there’s no snow and then you hit a band and you’re slamming on your brakes,” Clark said. Wednesday night between 6 p.m. and midnight, forecasters are expecting a “burst” of snow, Clark said. Some areas have already seen some accumulation, while others have not, because temperatures are hovering on the brink of freezing. However, it will get colder this weekend, Clark said. By Saturday night, temperatures are expected to drop into the teens with wind chills in the single-digits, Clark said
