Condor Airlines has discontinued its nonstop flights from San Antonio International Airport to Frankfurt, Germany, after just one summer season.
San Antonio’s first nonstop flight to Europe didn’t last long — Condor Airlines has dropped the Alamo City after one short summer season. The departure leaves San Antonio without a nonstop flight to Europe. The San Antonio International Airport announced the German airline’s decision on Monday. Condor launched summer service between San Antonio and Frankfurt , Germany, in May, with flights between the two cities on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday. The seasonal service ended in September.
Condor had committed to bringing back service next year, though it cut the number of flights it had originally planned to two per week as the airline struggled to attract German travelers to San Antonio. The airline, which targets leisure travelers, decided to discontinue service following a ruling Friday by the German Federal Court of Justice, according to the airport’s news release. The court overturned a measure that required German airline Lufthansa to provide feeder flights to Condor’s network. The measure had allowed passengers from North American cities to fly on Condor to Frankfurt and catch another flight on Lufthansa with the same ticket and with their bags checked through their final destination. The ruling overturning that requirement pushed Condor to drop service from Frankfurt to the United States cities of San Antonio, Baltimore, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Phoenix and Edmonton and Halifax in Canada, according to the airport’s news release. “This is not a decision we take lightly. Condor has cultivated strong professional and personal ties with San Antonio and the other affected communities over the years, and we deeply regret the loss of connectivity and service this will cause,” said Jens Boyd, commercial director for Condor. “We remain committed to exploring all avenues for fair competition, though we recognize that further legal proceedings will take time to resolv
