People on the east side are turning to local officials for change after a teenage boy was killed in a shooting right outside of their homes Monday night. This shooting is one of several deadly events to happen on Schley Avenue ; now, its residents are thinking about the next steps. 'My steps are, to reach out to our councilwoman and to our SAPD officers to see, you know what happened? What is going to happen? What they know, what I can share with my neighbors,' Ryan Garza said.
Garza is the neighborhood association president of Highland Park, where a 17-year-old was killed, and two others were shot Monday night.The teen's death adds to a list of several that have happened on Schley Avenue.Neighbors are now turning to city leadership for answers on how to keep their neighborhoods safe. 'What can we do to increase safety in Highland Park?,' Garza asked. 'In the past, we've requested.. increased patrol, but we do know that they can only do so much.''We have listened to the concerns and complaints expressed by our neighbors and residents in the area from this. While increasing patrols may provide temporary relief, it is essential that we explore a more comprehensive and specific course of action to address these issues effectively.' 'Another thing that we can hope for is increased lighting in the area to help deter crime at night,' Garza added. He encourages area residents to speak up but also acknowledges that's not always the easiest thing to do. 'Everything happens in numbers,' he started. 'You have a voice. You have people who echo your concerns... our concerns are your concerns, and we are here as an advocate for you at this at the city level.'But family and friends gathered at the scene Monday evening to honor his memory
