McHale was one of the main ensemble of the NBC sitcom, starring as disbarred lawyer Jeff Winger who attempts to reclaim his job by cheating his way through a local community college, though sticks around as the de facto leader of a dysfunctional study group.

Obviously now with this strike, which I am 100 percent behind, because it's time, we were going to shoot the Community movie, but that's going to be delayed, but we're still making it. We are still going to make it, it will just be a little bit delayed. The Community Movie's Long Road To Get Made The development of the Community movie is nearly as infamous as the show's running joke of "six seasons and a movie", with creator Dan Harmon having gone back and forth on his interest in penning the script for a continuation in the years following the show's conclusion.
Interest finally began ramping up for a Community movie during the COVID-19 pandemic when the show became a hit upon its Netflix premiere and stayed atop its charts in the years that followed, with Joe and Anthony Russo, who went from directing and executive producing the show to helming the last two Avengers movies, even expressing an interest in returning.
