Luis Ortiz joined Tanner Bibee in giving Cleveland back-to-back starts of at least 6 1/3 innings against the Twins.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — One night after Tanner Bibee became the first Guardians pitcher to toss seven innings in a game this season, Ortiz followed with 6 1/3 shutout frames of his own Ortiz struck out five and scattered three hits while walking a pair, but did not factor in the decision as Twins righty Pablo Lopez matched him through six scoreless of his own.
Shortstop finds himself on bench as Stephen Vogt looks for more offense: Guardians takeawaysWhen Cleveland finally broke through for four runs in the seventh, Ortiz settled for praise from manager Stephen Vogt, who pointed to the right-hander’s efficiency and ability to attack the strike zone in an effort that helped the Guardians save some innings for their worn out bullpen. “We needed that from Louis to have a chance to win this game and I know he won’t get the win, but Louis won the game for us,” Vogt said. “Just the efficiency, getting into the seventh that way and as many outs as you can record and to keep us in a zero-zero game where Pablo Lopez was on his A game today.” In four career starts at Progressive Field, including one with Pittsburgh last season, Ortiz is 2-1 with a 2.01 ERA and has thrown at least 5 2/3 innings in each start. Wednesday marked first time Cleveland starters have thrown at least 6 1/3 innings in back-to-back starts since May 10-11 last season when Carlos Carrasco and Triston McKenzie turned the trick. Ortiz said the adjustments that catcher Bo Naylor was able to make during the game helped him navigate Minnesota’s lineup the way Bibee had done the night before. “I think communication was the key,” Ortiz said via Guardians interpreter Agustin Rivero. “We’ve got really good communication going on before the game and we set up a good plan.” Ortiz said he and Naylor were also able to adjust quickly as the game went on when something was not working. “He does a good job with his location, his position behind the plate,” Ortiz said. “Those things have helped us to work really well. In-game communication is key for me.” Naylor, whose three-run homer in the seventh was the difference in the game, described Ortiz’s outing as “amazing.” “For him, it’s always about pounding the zone, just going out there with his strengths attacking, letting the velo play, letting the shapes play, and then just kind of letting everything fall into place,” Naylor said.“They want to one-up each other,” Vogt said. “They want to push each other and piggyback off of each other.”RHP Ben Lively vs. RHP Simeon Woods Richardson at 1:10 p.m. The game will air on CLEGuardians.TV, WTAM 1100 AM and the Guardians radio network. The Guardians travel north of the border to open a three-game series against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
