Cleveland's rotation surrendered just six total runs in six games at Progressive Field.
Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher Tim Herrin hugs starting pitcher Luis Ortiz after striking out Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez in the sixth inning.CLEVELAND, Ohio — When the Guardians returned to Progressive Field after a challenging 3-6 road trip to start the season, few could have predicted the absolute pitching clinic they were about to put on.
Over six games against divisional rivals Chicago and Kansas City, Guardians starters allowed a mere six total runs, setting the tone for a 5-1 homestand that has suddenly changed the team’s outlook. Leading the charge was Luis Ortiz, whose performance against Kansas City on Saturday night wasn’t just good – it was a declaration of intent. “I thought Luis Ortiz really had kind of a statement start,” Paul Hoynes said on the Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast. “After two shaky starts on the road, 5 1/3 innings, 1 earned run, career high, 10 strikeouts.” What made Ortiz’s outing so impressive wasn’t just the numbers, but the command he showed with his full arsenal. “This was the Ortiz that the Guardians have been waiting to see,” Hoynes explained. “Really dominant. He threw all three of his fastballs for strikes. The four seamer, the two seamer, the sinker. He mixed in some changeups.”The performance highlighted a curious trend for Ortiz – he seems to save his best work for Progressive Field. This pattern wasn’t lost on Joe Noga, who quipped, “Can we petition for all of Luis Ortiz’s starts to come at Progressive Field? Because it seems like from what we’ve seen, he’s dominant in that building and pretty much shaky everywhere else.” In fact, Ortiz’s success in Cleveland predates his time with the Guardians. “One of the reasons Cleveland went after him in the offseason was his performance last year at Progressive Field wearing the Pirates uniform against Cleveland,” Hoynes noted. “He’s given up one run, 17 strikeouts in about 13 innings here.” While Ortiz’s gem might have been the highlight, he was far from the only Cleveland starter to excel during the homestand. Tanner Bibee bounced back from a rough outing against the Angels to throw 4 2/3 scoreless innings against the Royals, though control issues drove his pitch count up early. “It was an important start for Tanner,” Hoynes observed. “After he really kind of stubbed his toe against the Angels on that road trip, giving up four home runs. Hoynes said the outing reminded him of watching Bibee early last year when he was struggling with mechanics. “He was looking to find a groove and eventually he found it,” Hoynes added. “I think Tanner Bibee is the least of Cleveland’s worries.” Gavin Williams and Logan Allen also contributed quality outings during the homestand, with Noga highlighting Williams’ seven-strikeout performance against the White Sox. For a Guardians team that has sometimes struggled to find offensive consistency, the rotation’s hot streak provided exactly the foundation needed for success. The question now becomes whether they can maintain this level of performance on the road, where they’ll face the Orioles and Pirates in their upcoming six-game trip. As the Guardians hit the road with an 8-7 record, just one game out of first place in the division, there’s a sense that things are coming together at just the right time. “This club is starting to play a little better,” Hoynes said. “They needed this home stand. They needed to do what they did on this home stand and now the organization is probably taking a deep breath and sigh of relief and so have their fans.” If the rotation can continue pitching at this level – particularly if Luis Ortiz can take his Progressive Field dominance on the road – that relief might soon turn to genuine excitement.
