This animated series on Adult Swim and Max blends slice-of-life comedy with a semi-comical conspiracy thriller. It follows Marshall, a botanist who discovers a miraculous blue mushroom with healing properties, as he evades government and corporate forces determined to control it.

Animation holds a unique power to express ideas in ways live-action film cannot, crafting individual worlds with distinct topographies, architectures, and character designs. When animators tackle established live-action genres, the result often feels both familiar and transformed. 'Common Side Effects,' premiering Sunday on Adult Swim and streaming from Monday on Max, exemplifies this.

Its use of caricature, distortion, and exaggeration evokes the aesthetics of underground comics, featuring characters with oversized heads, diminutive bodies, and tiny mouths and hands. This unconventional style, while seemingly crude, enhances their expressiveness and avoids ridiculousness. Painterly backgrounds anchor these characters in a tangible reality. \Created by Joseph Bennett and Steve Hely, the series centers on a blue mushroom, a panacea discovered in the Peruvian rainforest by Marshall (Dave King), a kindhearted yet rebellious botanist. Under constant government surveillance, Marshall's discovery threatens the pharmaceutical-industrial complex's lucrative grip on sickness. The series portrays a health industry willing to resort to lethal measures to protect its profits. After disrupting a presentation by Rick (Mike Judge, also an executive producer), the president of Reutical Pharmaceutical, Marshall encounters Frances (Emily Pendergast), his former high school lab partner. Unveiling a hidden agenda, Frances works for Rick, the very man Marshall has just publicly denounced. Despite this, Marshall convinces Frances of the mushroom's curative potential, leading her to secretly offer it to her ailing boss. \On Marshall's trail are two DEA agents, Harrington (Martha Kelly) and Copano (Joseph Lee Anderson), who embody the familiar camaraderie and idle banter of law enforcement officers. Their interactions, tinged with humor and a dash of absurdity, provide a counterpoint to the darker forces pursuing Marshall. However, other, more sinister agencies also have a vested interest in capturing the mushroom, raising the stakes for Marshall's survival. As he evades capture, aided by a pet tortoise he brought back from Peru, he finds himself intersecting with Frances, suggesting a potential alliance in their shared predicament
