A new Congressional spending bill includes a provision that could allow the Washington Commanders to move back to their former home at RFK Stadium.

A new Congressional stopgap spending bill includes a provision that would allow the NFL 's Washington Commanders to move sites to their old stadium. The provision moves the Washington Commanders one step closer to potentially returning to their former home in the nation's capital at the site of the old RFK Stadium.

The move marks a major win for the Washington Commanders and the NFL, following efforts by controlling owner Josh Harris and Commissioner Roger Goodell, who lobbied lawmakers earlier this month in support of the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act. The Commanders are exploring potential stadium sites in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia as they plan for the future. With their lease at Northwest Field (formerly FedEx Field) in Landover, Maryland, set to expire in 2027, Harris has identified 2030 as a 'reasonable target' for completing a new facility. The team called RFK Stadium home from 1961 to 1996 before relocating to Maryland, playing just two miles east of the capital during some of its most successful years. Harris, along with co-owners Mitch Rales and Mark Ein, grew up as fans of Washington football during that era, which featured the franchise's three Super Bowl titles between 1982 and 1991. The provision made its way into the bill after the Commanders agreed to demolish the stadium in Landover within a set timeframe and redevelop the site with a project of comparable economic impact, according to a source familiar with the situation. Additionally, Maryland Governor Wes Moore secured full federal funding to rebuild Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed earlier this year, and a fighter squadron is set to relocate from D.C. to Maryland, the source said. The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the agreement has not been publicly announced
