The San Diego Comic-Con, a global phenomenon celebrating creativity and fandom, has announced it will remain in the city through 2027. The decision, hailed by both city officials and convention organizers, recognizes the event's significant economic and cultural impact on San Diego.

The annual Comic-Con convention, a staple of San Diego since 1970, has reaffirmed its commitment to the city, extending its stay through 2027. This announcement, made by Mayor Todd Gloria, underscores the convention's profound impact on San Diego , both culturally and economically. ' Comic-Con is part of San Diego 's identity, and I couldn't be more thrilled to announce that it will remain here through 2027,' Gloria stated.

'This event is not just a celebration of creativity and fandom -- it's a major economic driver for our city, supporting local businesses and showcasing San Diego on a global stage. We're proud to continue this incredible partnership and look forward to welcoming fans from all over the world.'Comic-Con 2024 drew in over 135,000 attendees over its four-day run, injecting over $160 million into the regional economy. This figure encompasses both direct and indirect spending by attendees, according to city officials. In 2022 alone, the convention generated $3 million in hotel and sales tax revenue for San Diego, as reported in city documents. Rip Rippetoe, president and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center, echoed the sentiment of appreciation for the convention's continued presence. 'Comic-Con is the most famous convention in the world and the largest event we host at the San Diego Convention Center. We never take it for granted,' said Rippetoe. 'We appreciate the Comic-Con team and all our partners who contribute to a successful event year after year.'Despite its deep-rooted connection to San Diego, the convention's future in the city has never been a certainty. Yearly rumors swirl about its potential relocation to other cities, often stemming from concerns about hotel room availability and affordability. Comic-Con had previously confirmed plans to stay in San Diego through 2026. David Glanzer, a Comic-Con spokesperson, expressed the organization's delight at extending their stay. 'We are excited to stay in San Diego for the next few years, which is made possible, in large part, to the many hotels who offer competitive rates and meeting space,' Glanzer stated. 'It is vitally important to maintain affordable hotel rates for the tens of thousands who visit San Diego for Comic-Con each summer and, while it came down to the wire, we are grateful for the additional hotels who came on board to allow for this agreement to be signed.
