George Lucas speaks during a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Exposition Park in 2018, will be at San Diego Comic-Con for the first time on Sunday. The Star Wars creator will be on hand to discuss his new museum in Los Angeles, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, along with director Guillermo del Toro and singer Queen Latifah.
While most convention attendees would probably love Lucas to give all his thoughts on Star Wars for 12 hours, it seems the panel is mainly focused on the museum and only lasts one hour. Sunday is traditionally the day set aside for kids, and parents can expect plenty of events to keep the little ones entertained: the Children’s Film Festival, drawing classes and more. Lucas’ appearance makes for a bigger Sunday draw, whereas the last day is usually one a lot of attendees usually skip. The rest of the schedule is fairly light, even by Sunday standards.Mad Cave Studios and John Green host a lively, all-ages drawing workshop, hosted by Papercutz, where you’ll learn how to sketch characters from the hit Disney series step-by-step. Whether you’re a budding artist or a longtime fan, you’ll leave with your very own cartoon creation and a few behind-the-scenes laughs from surprise guests. The San Diego International Children’s Film Festival features creative, exciting, and imaginative short films from around the world—animation, live-action, and documentary—good for all ages. Throughout the day, animators and filmmakers will talk about their work, how kids can make their own films, and careers in animation and filmmaking.Legendary filmmaker George Lucas, Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro, and Academy Award-winning artist Doug Chiang explore the power of illustrated storytelling and offer a sneak peek of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, moderated by Grammy, Emmy, Academy Award-nominated, and Golden Globe Award-winning artist, Queen Latifah. The Disney and Dynamite teams have brought a new era of adventures for “Gargoyles” fans with their wildly popular series of titles, and there’s much more to come. Moderated by Jessica Tseang .Join George Takei for a powerful and heartfelt conversation about his extraordinary life and career. At 88, Takei is as vital and influential as ever—celebrating the release of his deeply personal new memoir, It Rhymes with Takei, and reflecting on the lasting impact of They Called Us Enemy, his bestselling graphic novel about his childhood in U.S. internment camps. From Star Trek legend to tireless activist, Takei brings humor, wisdom, and clarity to an era that desperately needs all three.Maybe you can’t judge a book by its cover, but no book was ever harmed by having a great cover. So, what makes a great cover? Does the idea precede the interiors, or is it the other way around? And why have covers become more varied and artistic in the modern age of comics? These and other related topics will be discussed by a group of artists who’ve drawn some acclaimed covers in the last few years, including Jim Lee, Rick Hoberg, Michael Cho, and Dan Jurgens. And it’s all moderated by Mark Evanier.Hosted by eigoMANGA, this workshop will be moderated eigoMANGA’s publisher Austin Osueke and a team of manga creators as they offer kids of all ages tutorials on manga illustrations and storytelling.Representatives from Comic-Con will be present to listen to attendees’ feedback about the event.
