The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has issued show-cause orders to 1,955 candidates for the barangay (village) and Sangguniang Kabataan (youth) elections accused of premature campaigning.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said that as of September 24, 2023, disqualification cases will be filed against 66 candidates.Garcia expects the number to increase as the poll body is set to issue more show-cause orders. Those who receive the order were directed to explain why they should not be disqualified from running.Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia .
This week, we will file disqualification cases [against those found to have violated elections laws], particularly premature campaigning. Hopefully, before the election, decisions would have been made on these cases,' he said.Garcia said of those who were issued with show-cause orders, 228 have submitted their response.'There are people who thought that the Comelec was just joking, just showing off. If before they were able to avoid being charged, now, not anymore,' he said.
