Nephew of Ryne Sandberg hit two homers on two pitches in one inning as a player, now in charge of Chihuahuas
rehabbing Padres starter Mike Clevinger and recent call-up Trayce Thompson. He’s polishing the edges of players on the big club’s 40-man roster, from infielder Eguy Rosario to pitchers Ryan Weathers and Reiss Knehr.This isn’t just any Triple-A job. Sandberg is the caretaker of the reinforcements the Padres inevitably will need during the grind of a 162-game season where anything short of the playoffs simply will not do.
“I’ve been in Texas before, where maybe we weren’t in the running, or previously where we’re not a contender,” said Ryley Westman, the franchise’s director of player development. “But once you’re a contender, you’re doing everything in your power to send guys up ready to contribute. The meandering professional path of Sandberg has been a seen-it-all journey. He’s been a Portland Sea Dog, a Corpus Christi Hook, a Bowling Green Hot Rod and a Charlotte Stone Crab. He’s settled into dumpy clubhouses. He’s chewed up miles on buses. He’s managed the famed Durham Bulls.“I remember at Pittsfield , you had to delay the game when the sun was setting because it was right in the eyes of a hitter,” Sandberg said.
Snell offered a personal seal of approval to the man safe-guarding the Padres’ not-too-distant future.
