On April 30, founder Roosevelt Brown brings the free Children's Book Party back to the Spreckels Organ Pavilion

Picture books. Science books. Books about art and sports and history. Fiction and nonfiction. Books for beginners and beyond.will be back in Balboa Park’s Spreckels Organ Pavilion, where book-party founder Roosevelt Brown will spend the morning distributing piles of books to young people of all ages and reading levels.

“They can say, ‘Mr. Brown is slowing down a little bit,’ but whatever happens, I’m going to be passing out books until I just can’t pass them out anymore.” All attendees will be able to handpick three books from the stacks, which will be organized by grade. And on their way out, they will be given a bag filled with more free books, all courtesy of Brown’s nonprofit organization, Reading Literacy Learning Inc., which also organizes smaller book giveaways throughout the year.

“The thing that always strikes me is, when a young person is choosing a book, there is this expression on their face. There is joy, and there is a seriousness in the way they look at the books. Like, ‘Look what I’ve got here,’” Brown said. Born in Arkansas and raised in San Diego, Brown was plagued by a speech disorder that made school a daily trial. When your goal is basic survival, there isn’t a lot of room for learning, much less thriving.

Through the company, Brown was able to take classes at San Diego City College and the University of Redlands. Through those classes, he developed the passion for reading that inspired him to drive through Emerald Hills with a pickup truck filled with used books donated by the Friends of the San Diego Public Library, where he was a volunteer.
