To decrease violence in Columbus, city leaders are expanding an initiative that focuses on gang group members.

, a $1,008,491 investment in 2024, with taxpayer dollars backing it.Columbus police identify groups and gang members who are asked to turn their lives around with the help of those involved in CVR.

"I remember saying something to her about yeah baby you can’t do that with your friends cause you’ll go to jail, and you’ll do this and that, and she was like, 'well dad, you do it', and I just didn’t know what to say, and what can I say," he said. "Besides don’t make my mistakes. Be better than me. I’ve got to do more than tell her that. I’ve got to lead by example."

"The police have identified people that are probably likely to either be shooters or be shot," said Molly Robbins, Director of CVR. "And so prior to waiting until that happens, the proactive message is that we kind of know what you’re involved in. We are going to do something different instead of waiting until something happens. We want to give you an opportunity to change.

"We understand that people have made bad choices, have been in situations that they even couldn’t prevent sometimes, and believe that people can change. If and when that happens, we’ll deal with that, but it won’t be because we were not taking the time to pay attention on the front end. We feel like we’ve done our due diligence."

"I saw a young man," said Malik Moore, a CVR volunteer. "His face. His energy. His whole posture just changed when he understood that we weren’t there to put the full weight of the law onto his shoulders but to help him with so many of the burdens he has in life as a result of the life he’s living."Wallace works at Express Employment in Columbus and helps get the participants jobs. She said she's always looking for companies that will employ people with a criminal past.
