COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The reigning MLS Cup champions finally get their first look at Lionel Messi on Wednesday night when theBoth clubs are coming off draws on Saturday. The Crew split the points against Christian Benteke and DC United, 2-2. Messi scored in a 1-1 draw for Inter Miami against Charlotte FC.
The two teams have played twice this season, with each winning once. Inter Miami won, 2-1, in their lone MLS regular season meeting, and the Crew came back from a 2-0 deficit to win, 3-2, at home in the Leagues Cup Round of 16.Christian Benteke scored two goals, giving him an MLS-leading 21 this season, for the D.C. United Saturday night in a 2-2 tie with Columbus Crew.
Benteke redirected a short pass from Gabriel Pirani and then beat goalkeeper Patrick Schulte for a goal from the center of the area to cap the scoring in the 81st minute. Benteke opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a one-touch shot, off a pass played by Ted Ku-Dipietro, from the center of the area. The 33-year-old forward is just the third player in franchise history to score at least 20 goals in a season, joining Raúl Díaz Arce and Luciano Emilio .
Juan “Cucho” Hernández seemingly effortlessly flicked a shot from outside the area under the crossbar into the left corner of the net in the 54th minute to make it 1-1 and then played a long, arcing entry from the right side to the center of the area, where Jacen Russell-Rowe put away a header to give the Crew a 2-1 lead in the 57th.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
