“His finger is swollen and it looks like some sort of infection,” Popovich said. “He’s back with the doctor right now taking a look at that so it doesn’t get worse.”Since taking over at center after the Spurs traded Poeltl to Toronto in a draft-deadline deal Feb. 9, Collins has been one of the Spurs’ top performers, averaging 16.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.1 steals in 19 games.
“He’s playing with abandon now, for a long time, for months,” Popovich said. “He’s added the three-point shot to his game, he’s balanced better on the post, he’s playing good defense.” Collins was particularly strong in the final weeks of the season. He finished with a 12-game streak of double-figure scoring games and averages of 19.2 points and 7.9 rebounds over his final nine games. During that span, he hit 43.9 percent of his shots from beyond the arc on 4.6 attempts per outing.
“The fact he can shoot it and has gained confidence in it really makes him that much more dangerous,” Popovich said.
