Scott Byrd gets tased during Coffee County's first every Jr. Deputy Academy.

Students learned that there's more to police officers than just handcuffs and a badge.NEW BROCKTON, Ala. - These past couple weeks, students thrust themselves into the law enforcement world.“The first day we had to do an obstacle course,” said another participant, Aletta Hall.

“The bomb squad actually came in today and I thought they were pretty cool,” said participant Molly Dignazio. By taking a deep dive into the daily lives of police officers, students learned that there’s more to them than just handcuffs and a badge.“I love to see young kids learn the dangers of the job that these guys do every day,” said Coffee County Sheriff Scott Byrd. “When they interact with a police officer in the future, they’ll know how they got here today.”

The Jr. Deputy Academy taught these students leadership, discipline and safety, and whether or not they grow up to be first responders, these skills will make them better people. “Our goal is to get these young people to be productive citizens and that’s what it’s all about,” said Byrd.“This is how we train heroes; these kids will probably never forget this,” said Byrd.“We are the elected officials to protect our country, so we need to step up and take the challenge,” said Byrd.
