Roads remain slick in Coffee County, with a busy night and plenty of challenges ahead for first responders.COFFEE COUNTY, Ala. - First responders have been busy during this snowstorm, particularly in rural areas like Coffee County.
News4 spoke to Coffee County Sheriff Scott Byrd and EMA Director Grant Lyons about their busy night and the challenges ahead. “I have lived here my whole life and I am 56 years old. This is once in a lifetime right here,” Sheriff Byrd said. “We had everyone trying to get home, back from their businesses and work and they all got stranded on 167 and 125. Roads got slick so 18-wheelers couldn’t pull the hills. Conditions went downhill quick and we fought semis into the night.” From semis stuck on the road to cars abandoned in the snow, Coffee County Sheriff’s deputies and other first responders worked well into the night.“The big challenge that the county faces is our county roads. Many of those roads may not see a lot of the sunshine today and tomorrow that some of the highways may see. Those roads are going to stay packed , and cold tonight, and refreeze with the possibility of black ice. Those roads are going to be an issue for the next couple of days for us,“ Lyons said. As the county prepares for the next few days of dangerous road conditions, Lyons said first responders will learn a lot from this historic event. “Another part of our job is that we will sit down after this incident, get around a table with all of these folks, and say what we have learned and what we can do better next time. We will definitely learn from this. We did some things very well and there are always places we can improve on so we will evaluate and be ready for the next one,” Lyons said. Lyons added the impassible travel advisory is expected to continue for the county into Thursday afternoon.
