A new owner is taking over the coffee spot that's been in business for almost 26 years.
Al and Sue Pera of Cornerstone Coffeehouse, pictured in 2023, announced they are retiring at the end of January. File photo by Sean Simmers | [email protected]“It’s so bittersweet and so emotional, but all in all it’s good,” Sue Pera said. “It’s not just a business but it’s my friends and my family I have there and the staff I have had there for so long.”
She took over the coffee spot in 1999 after owning the former Breads n’ Cheese in Derry Township. Cornerstone was one of the first coffee houses in the region and opened well before the arrival of national chains like Starbucks. The Peras’ retirement has been over a year in the making and was prompted after a buyer stepped forward. The new owner remains anonymous for now, but Sue Pera said, “Absolutely, we found the right person. I couldn’t be happier. She said Cornerstone’s staff will remain on board with no changes.
The Peras plan to rest and travel more in their retirement. On Wednesday, they announced the news on Cornerstone’s Facebook page.“You have become more than just customers — you’ve become genuine friends. Their successes here at Cornerstone are all owed to you. This is a bittersweet moment for the Peras, but it truly is the right time.”“You have created a wonderful place for people from all walks of life to feel welcomed. You have wonderful fare and wonderful employee,” shared one person.
“Goodbye, Sue and Al. Thanks for making Cornerstone into the great community place it is. And here’s to your next adventure!” said another. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
