The Manitoulin, a 663-foot Canadian vessel carrying 17 people, got stuck on Wednesday after delivering a load of wheat in Buffalo, New York, and attempting to return to Canada. While the ship sustained no damage and its crew remains safe, the thick ice presented a significant obstacle.
Freighters on the Great Lakes often encounter surface ice during the winter, but this situation involved ice that was too dense for the Manitoulin to break through. A U.S. Coast Guard icebreaking ship joined the rescue effort on Thursday, and on Saturday, a second U.S. Coast Guard ship arrived to assist. The Canadian Coast Guard is also contributing a vessel to the operation. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter is providing aerial surveillance to monitor the situation. A third U.S. Coast Guard ship is expected to arrive on Monday if the Manitoulin remains stuck.
