The Coast Guard said both Chinese vessels were operating within “the delineated U.S. Extended Continental Shelf” — a term for the area of the ocean claimed by the U.S. as an extension of traditional territorial boundaries.
The Coast Guard reported late Wednesday that it had detected and monitored two Chinese research vessels this week operating 200 miles off the Arctic coast of Alaska. The Coast Guard said in a statement the ship was a Chinese research ship flying under Liberian maritime registration.
The Coast Guard dispatched the icebreaker USCGC Healy to monitor the ship. An HC-130J Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak was deployed to provide aerial reconnaissance. On Tuesday, the Coast Guard detected the Chinese-flagged research vessel JIDI about 265 miles northwest of Utqiagvik. The Healy was again dispatched, though no aircraft was used in the second interdiction. The Healy and the HC-130J were sent out under the Coast Guard Arctic District’s Operation Frontier Sentinel, “Designed to counter adversary activity in U.S. waters,” the service said in its statement. “This operation highlights the value of our ice-capable fleet,” said Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Arctic District, based in Alaska. The Coast Guard said both Chinese vessels were operating within “the delineated U.S. Extended Continental Shelf” — a term for the area of the ocean claimed by the U.S. as an extension of traditional territorial boundaries. A United Nations agreement sets the extended continental shelf regions and gives each nation the exclusive mineral and other resource rights within its zone. Though the United States has not signed on to the U.N. agreement, it set its own “extended continental shelf” areas largely following the U.N. Formula, according to a report by Fordham University in New York. “The Arctic is a growing zone of strategic global competition,” the Coast Guard said. “The Coast Guard is the only U.S. surface presence in the Arctic and works in conjunction with U.S. Northern Command and Alaskan Command to constantly monitor foreign vessels operating in and near U.S. waters.” The South China Morning Post newspaper in Hong Kong reported on Aug. 25 that China has sent five vessels — including icebreakers and research ships — into the Arctic this summer. In September 2024, a joint Russia-China military flotilla passed through the Bering Strait, the 53-mile-wide maritime corridor between Russian far east Asia and Alaska that separates the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Sea at the far northern end of the Pacific Ocean. The North American Aerospace Defense Command in August tracked a Russian Ilyushin IL-20 long-range four-engine aircraft operating in the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone on four occasions. The zone is an expanded area beyond U.S. territorial airspace in which the American military responds and records the presence of foreign aircraft. From slaughterhouse worker to literary giant: George Saunders wins National Book Award Hundreds of South Koreans detained during immigration raid at Hyundai plant in Georgia, Homeland Security says Putin says foreign peacekeeping troops deployed to Ukraine could be ‘legitimate targets’ for Russian attacks
