Nicola Gunby, a 30-year-old entrepreneur, found herself struggling to connect with people after moving to London following the pandemic. Despite living in one of the world's most populous cities, Gunby felt isolated and longed for a sense of community. She tried various approaches, including attending networking events and utilizing social media apps, but felt these options lacked authenticity and genuine connection.
Gunby, along with her partner Jason Iliffe, realized that the issue of loneliness extended beyond their personal experiences and began brainstorming solutions. They conceived Cliq, a social networking platform designed to foster real-life connections through shared interests and activities. Cliq launched in February 2023 and quickly gained traction, amassing a user base of 100,000 people globally, with a strong presence in the U.S., Australia, and Bali. The app operates on a simple premise: users join communities centered around their hobbies and passions, such as running, reading, Pilates, or faith-based groups. These communities organize in-person events, providing a platform for users to meet, interact, and build lasting friendships.Gunby emphasizes that Cliq aims to bridge the gap between the superficial connections fostered by traditional social media and the genuine human interaction that often gets lost in the digital world. She believes Cliq offers a unique solution to the growing loneliness crisis, as it encourages users to invest in real-world relationships and shared experiences. The app's focus on community and shared purpose aligns with the recommendations of U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, who suggests investing in relationships, service, and community as a way to combat loneliness and find joy in life. Cliq seeks to provide a space where individuals can connect on a deeper level, find support, and build a sense of belonging in their communities
