Sophia's 'attention to detail is contagious and within minutes the other five girls match her energy. Each student volunteers to handle part of the work, and the team falls into a rhythm.'

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- “I’m going to name him Squishy,” Sophia exclaims, putting the worm she just unearthed in an empty plastic water bottle, tightly replacing the lid and setting the enclosure on the sidewalk. “He’s my new best friend!”

Earlier on this day, six of the girls and I were assigned a flower bed and given a tray of flowers, potting soil, mulch and a few tools. I kneeled down and started pulling weeds, urging them to join me. But Sophia was too worried about getting her new sweatshirt dirty. Knowing how these girls tick, I proposed a challenge – to not only be the first of the three groups to finish the work, but also to create the best-looking flower bed design.

The group agreed and Sophia – first to finish weeding – started digging with a small shovel, which brings us back to the discovery of Squishy. As Grace carefully removes the plants from their containers and shakes off the excess dirt, Sophia and Becca use the two shovels to dig their holes. Mary adds the plants and fresh soil, followed by Ruby, who tops it all off with mulch.
