Cleveland Metroparks considers demolishing the Grain Craft silos and buildings along the Cuyahoga River to create a new riverfront trail. The project, pending a $2.2 million grant, aims to enhance public access to the river and revitalize the historic Flats area.

Cleveland Metroparks is exploring the potential demolition of the Grain Craft silos and associated buildings situated along the Cuyahoga River in the Flats area of Cleveland. This move could pave the way for a new riverfront trail extending from Columbus Peninsula to Flats East Bank, aligning with Metroparks' initiative to enhance public access to the river.

However, the silos and structures could be preserved if the Metroparks ultimately determines that their development plans for the area are unfeasible. To initiate this potential redevelopment, Metroparks' Board of Park Commissioners has approved an application for a $2.2 million grant from Ohio's Brownfield Remediation Program. These funds would be allocated towards environmental remediation and the possible demolition of structures on the 3.3-acre Grain Craft property. The property encompasses a 6,030-square-foot mill building, a 1,075-square-foot storage shed, and 22 grain silos. Should the grant be approved, Metroparks would be obligated to contribute an additional $1.8 million, encompassing title costs incurred during the property acquisition and expenses related to environmental assessments. Metroparks acquired the property in August 2023 for $3.5 million following Grain Craft's closure in 2020. This acquisition is part of Metroparks' long-term vision to revitalize the riverfront. The organization intends to collaborate with a development partner to transform the Grain Craft property and adjacent riverfront land purchased in recent years. Some sections of the Grain Craft mill date back to the 1800s. The surrounding area, known as the Cleveland Centre Historic District, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features the terminal point of the renowned Ohio & Erie Canal, as well as railroad lines with a history stretching back to the 1850s
