The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is celebrating 50 years under the management of the Cleveland Metroparks and is looking forward to its 150th anniversary in 2032.

Updated: Jan. 01, 2025, 11:23 a.m.On March 22, 1912, deer were removed from the deer run at Wade Park and released at Brookside Park as part of the zoo's transition to its current location.CLEVELAND, Ohio – The new year marks 50 years since the Cleveland Metroparks began managing the zoo, and to be sure, a lot has changed since the 1970s. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo ’s Executive Director Dr. Chris Kuhar is only the 10th director in the Zoo’s 142-year-history and is looking to the future.

“It’s a truly momentous time for Cleveland Metroparks Zoo as we approach our 150th anniversary in 2032 and 50th anniversary as part of Cleveland Metroparks next year with the ongoing construction of the Primate Forest, the largest capital project in the Zoo’s history,” Kuhar said.The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s horticultural calendar — which spells the date and date in plants near the Primate, Cat and Aquatics building — is among the most popular spots to be photographed at the zoo. In March 1906, boys across Cleveland circulated a petition created by three council members to settle the location of the zoo; either staying in Wade Park on the city’s East Side or moving to Brookside on the southwest side.A petition circulated Cleveland to settle on where the city's zoo would be located.In 1907, after an agreement with City Council, the zoo began its monumental move to its current location in Brookside Park. In May 1907, the city began to arrange the general layout, “put up a special building for the elephant, and arrange a special run for the deer and elk,” the Plain Dealer reporte
