For the past several month, 19 News has been reporting about tire locks being placed on cars in Downtown Cleveland even after the drivers paid to park in the lot. Now, the City is stepping in.
reporting about tire locks being placed on cars in downtown Cleveland even after the drivers paid to park in the lot. 19 News has received several reports of people paying to park in the lots next to Harry Buffalo on East 4th Street and the lot across from the Drury Hotel on East 6th Street, but when they come back to their car there is a lock on the tire.
These “Tire Tags” are being placed on cars by independent workers hired by a company called Taggr. The workers then receive a certain percentage of money from each ticket. “It is a shotty business practice,” says Tyler Sinclair a spokesperson for the city of Cleveland. “Over the past several weeks, we looked into relevant city code, legal recourse, and what we could do moving forward and what actions we can take.”, which was launched on Tuesday and can be found on under the “community development” tab on the city’s website. “It just asks some basic information about your name, the date the incident happened, were you required to pay twice and then submit documentation,” says Sinclair.“This includes receipts that shows you paid, that shows screenshots of bank records, that shows you were double charged and had to pay twice to get the boot removed,” says Sinclair. He says this is the next step and taking action against Taggr. It is all about collecting evidence to build a strong case against the company. “Investigating misconduct of these potential bad actors like Taggr, we are going to look to see the trends and patterns that exist,” says Sinclair. The city has reached out to PMC, the owners of the parking lots.
