Astronomers say that the recent new moon means that the sight of one of the oldest known celestial showers won't be diminished by moonlight.

The annual Lyrid meteor shower will be visible from San Diego County this weekend under what’s expected to be nearly ideal conditions.

This week’s new moon means that heavy moonlight won’t diminish viewing Friday night into early Saturday and Saturday night into early Sunday, when the shower reaches its peak. It also appears that there will be very few clouds above the county, according to the National Weather Service. The overnight temperatures will be mild, only dropping to the mid-50s.Astronomers say that people should look for the star Vega in constellation Lyra. It will arise above the northeast horizon between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Vega will climb higher during the night.

“Lyrids don’t tend to leave long, glowing dust trains behind them as they streak through the Earth’s atmosphere, but they can produce the occasional bright flash called a fireball,” according to a NASA advisory.Find an area well away from city lights or street lights. Come prepared with a sleeping bag, blanket or lawn chair. Lie flat on your back with your feet facing east and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible.
