Philanthropic donations are unlikely to be touched by a proposed “wealth tax” on top universities, Education Minister Jason Clare has said. The tax, which was recommended in a review of higher education released on Sunday, would charge high-performing universities a levy based on fee revenues and philanthropic donations to contribute to a national higher education future fund.
“There are some universities who hate , while there are other universities who love it,” he said. Clare said the fund could be used to build more affordable university accommodation and to invest in higher-quality research and teaching facilities. University of Sydney vice chancellor Mark Scott criticised the proposal, saying it punished high-performing universities.
