Team's top prospect has pushed with his play to make the jump from Double-A

It wasn’t quite the same spectacle as a spring training game three years ago when a 20-year-old Fernando Tatis Jr. beat out two infield singles, stole two bases and scored twice, one of those times running from first base around to home on a routine single to center field.

There may still be a decision to be made. Some in the organization are wary of rushing the 21-year-old Abrams, who has played just 76 games in the minor leagues, none of them above Double-A. If on the roster, the left-handed hitter would likely play almost exclusively against right-handed pitchers at first. There is an anticipation he will struggle against major league breaking balls.

So no one ruled out his making the big-league club, especially after Tatis’ injury was discovered on the eve of spring training. But the team’s decision makers essentially said it would take a better spring by Abrams than what Tatis did in ’19. They based that on Abrams being less experienced than Tatis was then and the Padres’ roster being stronger now.

What Abrams could see was the third baseman playing off the line. So, he squared to bunt on the next pitch and rolled the ball down the line for a single. He advanced to second base on a groundout and scored on Matt Beaty’s single.
