The off-duty Harris County deputy killed by gunfire Thursday night was making a birthday...

told his wife to get to safety as he challenged three men who were attempting to steal his truck.

Harris County Deputies Organization President David Cuevas confirmed Almendarez had been shopping with his wife at Joe V's grocery store at the 2900 block of FM 1960 about 8:40 p.m. when he apparently saw the men trying to remove a catalytic converter from his car.He first met Almendarez when the two were detention officers, working in the jail, before they'd even attended the department's peace officer academy.

The deputy is survived by a wife and two children from a previous marriage, Gonzalez added. Almendarez had served as a part of HCSO's auto theft division for the past year. "Law enforcement is an inherently dangerous job, but what happened is unacceptable. It is a terrible day when a family trip to a grocery store ends in violence and loss of life," Turner said.
