KOTA KINABALU: Graft busters have detained three civil servants for allegedly accepting bribes in return for issuing boat licences to tour operators in Labuan.

The suspects, aged between 50 and 60, were arrested when they showed up at the Labuan Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office at noon on Thursday .

A source said the suspects had received between RM3,000 and RM5,000 for each licence issued, adding they were attached to a government department at the Kota Kinabalu and Lahad Datu branches. “The suspects had received bribes from tourism operators between 2017 and 2019 for the issuance of small boats licences,” the source said.

The source added the licences were meant to allow boats to carry more than 12 passengers but that the issuance were however not according to the proper application procedures.He said the suspects will be brought to the Labuan Sessions Court tomorrow for a remand application, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009.
