The Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been a tradition on Superior Avenue for the past 20 years, but that could change due to the new Superior Midway Project. Concerns have been raised about the future of the parade, but now the City is speaking out.

CLEVELAND , Ohio - The Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been a tradition on Superior Avenue for the past 20 years, but that could change due to the new“This isn’t a choice between the Superior Midway Project and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We have space and passion for both of those things,” says Calley Mersmann, Senior Strategist for Transit and Mobility.

The plan is to put a 12-foot track down the middle of the road, with a bicycle path and two eight-foot landscape buffers.Mersmann says the City has been working on this project for the past ten years.“We have worked through many of those concerns. Looking at the plans and adjusting them as we could. Talking about where we could reallocate landscaping, put a hard surface in the median so that spectators could sit there,” says Mersmann.

“We know from a lot of research that when roads are wider than they need to be for the volume of cars using them, that cars tend to go faster. Which means when crashes happen they tend to be more serious leading to more injuries and fatalities,” says Mersmann.Organizers of the parade say they understand the need to upgrade Superior Avenue and make it safer for pedestrians.

“The reason that we are not comfortable giving more space in the roadway is because wider streets lead to faster driving and that contributes to more serious crashes,” says Mersmann. “When we think about day in and day operations of Superior, the safety of our residents, people working Downtown and moving along the street is our top priority.”
