City officials are set to discuss the possible changes at a Fairbanks City Council special work session on Monday.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Fairbanks Police Department is planning to ask city officials to hike the fees for obtaining body camera footage and other audio and video through public records requests.
The police department accounts for about 90% of all records requests sent to the city, he said. According to city data, the department received about 3,800 total requests in 2023, though they weren’t all for audio or video.Dupee said evidence custodians spend an average of 10 minutes per one minute of video to prepare footage for release, blurring faces of minors, blacking out identifying information, such as drivers’ licenses, and deleting sensitive audio as needed.
The schedule also allows for an “hourly fee based on gross hourly rate of employee searching/preparing records requested.”While the city can sometimes enlist the fee schedule to loop in staff time and drive up the charge beyond the flat fee, city code mandates that those working hours can only become part of the fee calculation if staff time is expected to exceed five hours.
