SAN ANTONIO - Local officials celebrated the kickoff of Hispanic Heritige Month
City leaders and the art community gathered for a celebration of the kickoff of Fiestas Patrias and Hispanic Heritage Month . Around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the City of San Antonio 's Department of Arts and Culture, alongside the Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission hosted a kickoff event for Fiestas PPartias at the Centro de Artes Gallery.
"It's a wonderful period of time where we remember, observe, and celebrate our history as it relates to the relationship between Mexico and the United States, but more importantly, a time when Mexico was fighting for its independence," said Gabrial Velasquez, CEO of the Avenida Guadalupe Association.
Fiestas Patrias San Antonio celebrates both Dieciseis de Septiembre as well as the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. "It's so exciting to remember our history and what better way to learn our history than to remember that?" said Velasquez. The event featured a series of festivities to commemorate Mexico's independence from Spain in 1810 and honor San Antonio's strong connection to Mexico and deep-rooted Hispanic culture.
