Seattle may soon create Stay Out of Drug Area zones in two sections of the city that are seeing ongoing problems involving fentanyl and crime.

Seattle City Council member Bob Kettle is sponsoring the proposed SODA ordinance and will bring it up for an initial vote later this month in a council committee.

The proposed legislation would allow a judge to prohibit people from entering a designated zone if they commit a drug-related offense in that same area. The length of the ban would be up to the discretion of the judge but could be in place for up to two years. The SODA order could also be imposed as a condition of pre-trial release following an initial arrest as well as after a person is convicted.

The first is in downtown Seattle stretching from Stewart Street to University Street and from 6th Avenue to 1st Avenue. The second is in the International District, which extends from S Main Street to S Dearborn Street and from Boren Avenue to Rainier Avenue S. Davison said efforts were taken in establishing these boundaries to avoid locations that provide substance abuse treatment and permanent supportive housing.

Seattle City Councilmember Bob Kettle is sponsoring the legislation. It will go before the Council’s Public Safety Committee on Aug. 13. If it moves to the full Council, a final vote could happen in August or early September.
