A comprehensive plan to address hot spots for crime and drug overdoses is being presented to members of the Seattle City Council Thursday.
A presentation is being made to Seattle City Council leaders on July 11, 2024, about a new comprehensive approach to addressing neighborhoods where crime and drug overdoses overlap. to address hot spots for crime and drug overdoses is being presented to members of the Seattle City Council Thursday, and Council President Sara Nelson said it needs to be acted on with urgency.
The plan being presented to the City Council comes after a report of overdoses and crime concentration was released by the Seattle Office of City Auditor on July 9. “Addressing Places in Seattle Where Overdoses and Crime are Concentrated: An Evidence-Based Approach.”“What this audit calls for, first and foremost, is for the mayor's office to take the lead on coordinating efforts across city departments, assign an accountable lead for that work and then use already existing resources to get the job done,” Nelson said.
Among the top recommendations are to have the Seattle Mayor’s Office designate a high-level project champion to lead the effort and be accountable for its results. They want to have the effort coordinated through the Seattle Office of Emergency Management, seek technical assistance and collaboration from federal agencies, and lastly regularly evaluate efforts to address places where overdoses and crime are concentrated.
“Let's make sure that we are using our resources in a targeted fashion to make the biggest change possible in the near term, like right now,” Nelson said.
