Across the nation, cities are reacting differently to increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned ICE, while Chicago's police superintendent opted for collaboration within sanctuary law guidelines. Meanwhile, Virginia's new governor ended the state's participation in a federal program assisting ICE.
Aside from Minneapolis , ICE has ramped up its efforts in cities across the nation. However, local officials have responded in various ways, employing different rhetoric. To ICE , get the f**k out of Minneapolis .
We do not want you here," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said following the fatal ICE-involved shooting of 37-year old Renee Good on Jan. 7.If the goal here is to create peace and safety and calm, there's a very clear antidote here which is leave," Frey said during an appearance on CNN's State of the Union Sunday. Law enforcement detain a man outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building during a protest on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, in Minneapolis. When you approach someone in a vehicle, in law enforcement encounter, it's very basic steps you take to ensure the officer's safety and to de-escalate the situation," Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara told 60 Minutes. We're seeing it happen over and over again. We've seen over 100 different vehicles weaponized and attacking law enforcement officers," DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said on 'Face the Nation.' Meanwhile, in Chicago, during ICE's "Operation Midway Blitz" in October, the city's police superintendent took a different approach. He emphasized the need to work with the federal government while complying with sanctuary laws and protecting federal agents. Do not box in any law enforcement officer. You are breaking the law when you do that," CPD superintendent Larry Snelling said in October 2025. Aside from Minneapolis, anti-ICE action has intensified across the nation. Newly elected Virginia Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger recently ended the state's participation in a federal program allowing law enforcement to act as ICE agents. State and local law enforcement should not be required to divert their limited resources to enforce federal civil immigration laws," Spanberger said. Plus, in Maryland, the proposed "ICE Breaker Act of 2026," sponsored by a Democratic delegate, would prevent ICE agents hired during Trump's second term from transitioning into local or state roles. It sounds as though this politician wants people to believe that an ICE agent can just come into their town and tomorrow be a patrol officer in their town. It's simply ridiculous," said Betsy Brantner Smith, Spokesperson for the National Police AssociationAccording to the New York Post, New York City's Democratic Socialists of America chapter is also organizing a large-scale effort to mobilize and train around 4,000 activists in response to anticipated federal ICE action.Update, Mon.
